Wanda Svevo Historical Archive
The Arquivo Histórico Wanda Svevo [Wanda Svevo Historical Archive] was created in 1954 by initiative of the then employee of the Biennial Exhibition at the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo - MAM-SP, Wanda Svevo. The creation of the Archive was inspired by and modeled after the Archivio Storico d’Arte Contemporanea della Biennale di Venezia.
The purpose of the Archive is to assure the organization, preservation and dissemination of documents related to the two biennial events organized by Fundação Bienal: the Art Biennale and the Architecture Biennale. As well as the materials produced by Fundação Bienal during these events, the Archive also contains a wide range of documents and information on Brazilian and international art as for the 1950’s.
The A.H.W.S. collection is mostly made up of textual documents related to the curatorial process and mounting of the Biennials and artists’ dossiers. It also contains plenty of iconographic materials such as posters, photographs, and audiovisual recordings.
The A.H.W.S. Library is made up of research documents undertaken during the curatorship of the Art and Architecture Biennials, as well as book exchanges and donations received from art institutions. Currently, the library encompasses approximately 20,000 titles on art history and critic, art education, artists’ catalogues, exhibitions, and major Brazilian and foreign exhibitions, in addition to art-related journals.
The Arquivo Histórico Wanda Svevo is listed by the State of São Paulo Council for Historical, Archaeological, Artistic and Tourist Patrimony (CONDEPHAAT) and holds 580 linear meters of documents supported by different formats. The Archive occupies over 400 square meters on the second floor of the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo building (Ciccillo Matarazo Pavilion).
